If you love what you do, you don’t “work” a day in your life. I love being a home inspector. From the time I was a little boy walking around the hardware stores and watching TV shows like “This Old House” or “New Yankee Workshop” I have been fascinated with building houses or improving building techniques.
I was fresh out of college, working a first office job in transportation, when my career path veered. Though I did not particularly enjoy the work, I was good at my job. In the fall of 1999, my father-in-law discovered termites in his detached garage. He got the structure treated by the pest control company, and then we spent weekends and evenings replacing the damaged wood. I really enjoyed it, and then suddenly realized I was in the wrong field. I put out my resume and quickly found a job with Pulte Homes. Working for that home builder was so much fun. I found it very rewarding to help families find their own place in this world.
After almost a decade with Pulte, the housing market crashed, and my career path veered again. I credit my wife with helping me see where I should go. She could see the writing on the wall and knew better than I did that a change was coming. As we discussed the future, she helped me see that being an inspector would still help me help families find their place in this world. In March of 2009, I earned my license to inspect homes.
My goal for is that all my clients understand the condition of the property they want to purchase and typically make their home. There really is no place like home. It is where often celebrations occur, and where we recover from setbacks. We often host visitors or weather storms in our homes. I truly appreciate being part of the process in finding “home”.
I am starting my tenth year as a home inspector. I have been very fortunate to help first time buyers, first move ups, downsizers and even investors better understand the property that they may purchase. I have helped buyers from the entire purchase spectrum; from truly humble house to large mansions and from new construction to “fixer uppers”. I truly look forward to the next inspection and finding out what that property is like.
While I have enjoyed almost two decades in the construction/inspection field, there is much more to life and success. I have been blessed to have a wonderful wife of 22 years, who is truly my best friend and has truly made me a better man. I have two wonderful daughters in college and two wonderful sons still in grade school. While I enjoy working as a home inspector, I love being a husband and father. I love fixing problems at my house (and even at my in-law’s house). When I have time, I enjoy wood working, fixing broken things around the house and riding bikes with my boys.
